Research peptides and UK law

The UK does not have a category of law called "research peptides". The position follows from general medicines and drugs legislation, and it is more restrictive than many sellers imply.

Medicines law

The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 govern medicinal products in the UK, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) enforces them. A product that is presented as treating or preventing a condition, or that is administered to restore or modify a physiological function, is a medicinal product. Selling or supplying a medicinal product for human use without a marketing authorisation is an offence, and so is advertising one.

This is the line that matters. A compound supplied for in-vitro research is not a medicinal product. The same compound sold with claims about what it does in the body, or with the evident purpose of being administered to people, is — and the label on the vial does not change that.

Controlled substances

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 control specific substances and classes. Most research peptides are not scheduled under either, and where that is the case they can be lawfully supplied for research. Scheduling can change, and some compounds are controlled in other jurisdictions when they are not in the UK. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm the status of a specific compound before ordering, and a reputable supplier will say plainly that it does not sell controlled substances.

What research-use-only permits

It permits supply for legitimate scientific research in a laboratory. Suppliers set purchase conditions to reflect that: buyers confirm they are qualified researchers or purchasing for a research institution, are over eighteen, will use the products solely for lawful research in a suitable environment, and accept responsibility for compliance in their jurisdiction. Using a research compound outside those terms is a breach of the terms of sale and may be unlawful.

Investigational drugs

Compounds that are in clinical trials but have no marketing authorisation — investigational medicinal products — are a specific case. They are lawfully available only to trial participants, under a protocol, from supply manufactured to pharmaceutical standards. There is no approved retail source for an investigational drug, and a research-chemical vendor offering one is operating outside regulation whatever the labelling says.
